After farming in Gorham for nearly 100 years, Benson Farm has learned a lot about conservation. Understanding that the land we live on is central to raising healthy animals, healthy crops, and healthy families: they believe that what’s invested into the soil is intricately connected to the quality of the food that’s harvested, just as the food we eat is intricately connected to our wellbeing. Composting is nature’s way of returning nutrients to the land in a natural and powerful recycling process and plays an important role in improving the sustainability of our communities.
Benson Farm offers a commercial-scale recycling option for local businesses in their DEP-certified facility with nearly all of their inputs coming from within 20 miles of their farm. They hold high standards for their inputs to minimize the risk of forever chemicals, microplastics, weed seeds and invasive pests from spreading into gardens and their products are approved by MOFGA for use on certified organic crops and gardens.
Benson Farm’s Community Good program supports over a dozen schools, non-profits and community gardens including the Maine School Garden Network. They believe that compost can do a great deal of good in our community and are proud to support mission-driven organizations as they work to end food insecurity, educate students and build vibrant community gardens.
Thank you Benson Farm for being the May Sponsor of the Month in the 2026 School Garden of the Month Calendar!
