Kennebec Montessori School is the oldest Montessori school in the state of Maine, operating since 1976 and accredited by the American Montessori Society since 2007 from local communities including Pittsfield, Unity, Skowhegan, Kingfield, Belgrade, China, Augusta and Dexter. A non-denominational private school, they promote curiosity and exploration through experiential learning for children ages 3 – 12 by fostering the independence that each child yearns for by promoting responsibility for themselves, others and the environment.
Their work is driven by the needs of the whole child; social, emotional and cognitive and they embrace the opportunity to support children academically on their unique paths as lifelong learners. The campus is situated on 14 acres of fields and woodlands with a stream and beautiful views.
Students of all ages participate in planting seeds and seedlings into the ground, add compost to the beds and they have worked hard to put temporary fencing around the garden space. In addition to the students and staff, volunteer parents have plans to make the new permanent fence.
The garden space has been expanded this year to make room for pumpkins and a three sisters planting. They are also refurbishing their hoop house to use it to grow seedlings and greens in the winter time.
Their school garden is a place of peace and relaxation for everyone and the school community enjoys having the garden as a resource for teaching… and for fun!
