Started in 2019, the Brownfield Community Educational Food Forest project is hosted at the Community School in Brownfield, Maine. Coordinated by volunteer Vincent Carbone, the garden provides an educational hub for activities such as workshops and civic engagement for the town. Currently the garden portion of the project includes a vegetable and herb garden, flowers, ornamentals and fruit trees. Local youth and members of the community tend the garden both during the school year and summer months.
The Community Educational Food Forest is a vibrant hub of activity, offering a wide range of benefits to the community. This thriving ecosystem not only provides fresh produce and a haven for biodiversity, but also serves as a living classroom, educating visitors about sustainable practices, permaculture principles, and the importance of community involvement.

Community youth play a vital role in the forest’s success, participating in hands-on learning experiences, assisting with maintenance and upkeep, and contributing to the development of new initiatives. Their enthusiasm and energy are contagious, inspiring others to get involved and make a positive impact.
The supportive parents of these young participants are also instrumental in the forest’s growth, volunteering their time and expertise to help with educational workshops, event planning, and project implementation. Together, the community comes together to build a stronger, more resilient food system, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the forest and its many benefits.
Through open and transparent communication, they are working to bridge gaps and build trust within their community. By sharing knowledge, experiences, and ideas, they are creating a culture of cooperation and shared purpose. The Community Educational Food Forest is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the impact that can be achieved when people come together with a shared vision. The project is not just about growing food, but about growing people – fostering a sense of connection, community, and stewardship for the land. We’re creating a model for sustainable community development that can be replicated and adapted in other contexts, inspiring positive change and promoting a deeper understanding of our relationship with the natural world.
