Full Plates, Full Potential believes the best solutions come from those most affected by the systems they are working to change. In school meal programs, they strive to amplify student voices and create opportunities for them to transform the system from within. As a result, they are creating a group to join a Maine Youth Food Council coalition of high school age changemakers who are interested in working to address food insecurity in their communities.
Members will collaborate with their schools, local organizations, businesses, and government agencies to develop and implement projects that center youth voice and choice in the school food system, ensuring that every child in Maine has access to nutritious meals.
Besides project work and addressing food insecurity, the council will also provide opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills, gain experience in community organizing, and learn about food systems and policy. The MYFC opens up opportunities to participate in state and local legislatures.
Know any youth in Maine who might be interested in getting involved? The MYFC is currently recruiting a diverse group of young Mainers who are passionate about food access for students to join the council! In person and virtual hybrid meetings will be held from October through May.
