Signs serve many purposes and signage for your school garden can do more than just identify where your school garden is located. Signs can be permanent or temporary, inform the public that this is a school garden plus promote your projects, events and fundraisers.
- Having a plant sale? Make a sign to let the community know when it is happening!
- Working with UMaine Cooperative Extension on a project? Make a sign to inform the community about what you are doing and why!
- Need volunteers for a work day? Make a sign with where to get more information. You never know who is taking a stroll on school grounds after hours.
Here are some things to think about when considering adding signage to your school garden:
- Do you need permission from your school before you put up a sign?
- Does your school garden have a name and does it reflect your school garden project?
- Are you simply identifying where the school garden is located or do you want to convey additional information?
- Does your school garden have a logo, mission or slogan that could be incorporated in a sign?
- Would a handmade sign be best or should you purchase one made commercially?
- What materials should you use to make a sign? Are they weather resistant? Should the sign be illuminated?
- Where would you put the sign and how would it be installed? Choose a location that will be highly visible by your target audience and consider taking advantage of a fence or building for your signage.
- What about signs for events such as banners, sign boards, bulletin boards and more?
- Do you have money to make or buy a sign? Is there a local business that would give you a discount or donate a sign?
- How about signs to identify plants or sections of the garden?
- Consider drafting a simple list of the types of sign you need for your school garden so you have a plan that you can execute one sign at a time.
