When was your garden project started?
April 2024
What type of facility hosts your garden?
Middle School / School Grounds
What programs does your garden project include?
The greenhouse supports our Farm-to-School efforts through seasonal growing projects and collaboration with the local garden club. Crops are grown with the goal of creating future hands-on learning opportunities for students.
Does your garden have a paid coordinator?
No
Who volunteers in your garden?
Our Farm-to-School Specialist and members of the York Garden Club
How is your garden project funded?
The garden is supported through a combination of Nutrition Department funds, personal contributions, in-kind donations, and support from the York Garden Club and middle school staff.
What community connections do you have?
Our primary community connection is the York Garden Club, whose members volunteer in the greenhouse. The garden also connects to our school community through the Nutrition Department and Farm-to-School efforts.
Who tends the garden when school’s out?
The Farm-to-School Specialist maintains the garden throughout the summer, along with support from a member of the York Garden Club.
What are your future goals?
Our goals are to keep the greenhouse healthy and productive, grow a wider variety of crops, and find more ways for students to be involved when possible. We would also like to continue our relationship with the York Garden Club and make the most of the greenhouse as part of our Farm-to-School program.
What is your most significant need?
Our most significant need is funding for greenhouse supplies and maintenance, as there is no dedicated paid time or budget for the garden. Grant support would help us keep the greenhouse productive and make improvements that would allow us to create more opportunities for students in the future.
