When was your garden project started?
25 years ago at least!
What type of facility hosts your garden?
Our garden is on our school property.
What programs does your garden project include?
The garden program here is a school project, preparing the soil, starting and planting seeds, adding mulch for the summer months when we aren’t here, harvesting in the fall, using the harvest for cooking, keeping seeds, sharing seeds with our community.
Does your garden have a paid coordinator?
No
Who volunteers in your garden?
The staff at school works in the garden with and along side children as part of our curriculum. Over the summer months, staff will come by and work in the garden on their own time, or the admin who is paid for some summer hours will work in the garden.
How is your garden project funded?
Tuition and supply fee funds are used for the garden. We have gotten grants from ecomaine in the past for garden beds, soil and composters.
What community connections do you have?
Cape Land Trust, Cape Farm Alliance newsletter when they were active, we have used the locally sourced wood products from The Lumbery when we do garden projects or need Coast of Maine soils.
Who tends the garden when school’s out?
Admin and Director
What are your future goals?
To protect the garden from critters- deer and woodchucks, turkeys, rabbits, etc. And grow more food for fall harvest to be used in cooking curriculum, science of seeds and growth and to be shared with others.
What is your most significant need?
Funds to add some critter proof mesh or wire directly in the raised beds (there is already a picket fence), seedlings, mulch/straw.
