Good nutrition is the foundation to a healthy life and there is nothing better for your body than farm fresh vegetables! My name is Brittany Layman, RN and I am the Director of Health, Wellness and Safety for RSU 22 in Hampden. I grew up in Columbia, ME on a 175 acre horse farm and enjoyed hiking and hardwork! Upon graduation from the University of Maine in 2005 with a degree in nursing I began working on the inpatient oncology unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center. After 10 years and a variety of roles on the unit, including charge nurse and clinical educator, I decided it was time for a change. Boy did I do that!! In October 2014, I started as RSU 22’s Health and Wellness Coordinator and part time elementary school nurse. My role includes substance use prevention work, employee wellness and managing a number of school gardens and three orchards. My job allows me to work in the garden during school hours and engage with kids! During my spare time I coach volleyball and track and field along with hiking long distances (almost done the AT in Maine with a goal of hiking the whole thing)! I live in Hampden with my 2 daughters, Cami who is a student at Hampden Academy and AJ who is a student at Reeds Brook Middle School. I am honored to be the newest member of the Maine School Garden Network board.
