During Hive Week at Leavitt Area High School in Turner, students participate in a hands-on, experiential learning course focused on a hobby or area of interest topic of their choice outside the classrooms. The goal is to give students the opportunity to learn about projects not covered in regular school instruction and make connections with people outside their usual circles. The school hopes that doing something new and fun during the last week of school will help reenergize students and staff as well as close out the year on a high note.
Started in 2023, Hive Week takes place the last week of school after final exams. Students received a digital Hive Week Catalog and chose from about 50 selections! The Leavitt Institute Trustees provided the funds for all the activities. The expectation is that all freshmen, sophomores and juniors participate in the program and in return, they earn a quarter of a credit in experiential learning.
For this year’s Hive Week, a course was offered titled Leavitt’s Grounds’ Bees with a goal to create beautiful gardens on both sides of the entry to school. The team included students Alexis Child, Evelyn Dutton, Lilah Mosher and John Pinoski who worked with teachers Mrs. Pelletier and Mrs. Hayford.
The week kicked off with a field trip to Pineland Botanical Gardens to get ideas for our gardens and learn more about plants and shrubs. Then the students shopped locally to purchase plants and shrubs for the garden and rolled up their sleeves. The result? It was a satisfying and fun week, students created a wonderful garden for all to enjoy and can now pride in their amazing accomplishment!
